One of my all time favorite movie scenes is from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indy is on a hill inn the desert with Sallah watching the Nazi's drive away with the Ark and Sallah says to him something like "What is you plan Indy?" and Indy replies "I don't know, I'm just making it up". A sign of a true hero if every there was one. Most of the best adventures I have every played in or run were either all improvised or heavily improvised.

You've hit on a good subject. Improv skills are very useful ones to have in your GMs box of trickery. Practice, may make perfect but help can ccome in other forms, too. Many books and seminars have been done help tone up your improv muscles. Even Harvard Business Review has published articles on the merit of improv skills for leadership. Improv skills can come naturally to some, but the rest of us gotta learn 'em :) I was lucky enough to get involved with a theatre troupe that excelled at improv and knew how to hone their skills. Many performing arts schools have classes on improving your improv :) Not only is it a useful tool for a GM, it's huge fun to practice with others.
